Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) and the Film Censorship Board (LPF) have announced plans to provide the national film industry with more opportunities to produce creative, critical, and high-quality works. This initiative aims to foster a balance between openness in creative expression and adherence to national interests, contributing to a mature and competitive Malaysian film ecosystem.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the KDN emphasized its commitment to maintaining security, public order, societal harmony, and national interests. The ministry's approach aligns with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's suggestion to offer more space for experimentation and expression in the film industry, encouraging innovation and relevance amid societal and technological changes.
KDN clarified the processes of classification and censorship under the Film Censorship Act 2002 (Act 620), highlighting their complementary nature. Classification assesses content suitability based on audience age categories, while censorship involves comprehensive evaluation in line with existing laws, policies, and guidelines. Despite age classification, films undergo LPF's censorship process, with content adjustments made as necessary to comply with regulations.
The ministry reiterated that content evaluation considers various elements, including scenes, dialogue, themes, and narrative context, to ensure creativity flourishes without compromising public interest. LPF retains the authority to take appropriate actions if content does not meet stipulated requirements, potentially impacting its approval for screening.
KDN and LPF are committed to refining their censorship approach, aiming for a more progressive, responsive, and professional framework aligned with industry development. Public and national interests remain a priority, with close scrutiny on content that could threaten security, public order, or socio-cultural values. Additionally, LPF considers national and international sensitivities to safeguard Malaysia's image and diplomatic relations.
