Kaamatan Festival Highlights Malaysia’s Unity and Harmony

Kuala lumpur: The Kaamatan Festival celebrated by the Kadazan-Dusun, Murut, and Rungus communities in Sabah is more than a cultural celebration, serving as a symbol of gratitude, unity, and togetherness in the state's multiracial society. In a Facebook post, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof emphasized the significance of the harvest festival, observed annually on May 30 and 31, as a reflection of the harmony enjoyed by Malaysians irrespective of race, religion, or cultural background.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, noted that the 2026 Kaamatan Festival theme, 'Harvesting Unity, Celebrating Harmony,' aptly captures the spirit of togetherness and cooperation among Sabahans. This is particularly vital in facing global challenges such as economic uncertainty, rising living costs, and energy and supply chain disruptions. Fadillah highlighted that this spirit is the foundation of Malaysia's strength in overcoming challenges, ensuring the nation remains stable, competitive, and sustainable. He expressed his hopes for the festival to bring blessings and well-being while further strengthening unity and goodwill among Malaysians, ending his message with "Kotobian Tadau Tagazo do Kaamatan (Happy Kaamatan Festival)."

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also shared his views on Malaysia's rich cultural tapestry. In a Facebook post, he stated that the rich diversity of cultures, customs, and traditions passed down through generations makes the country unique and harmonious, shaping its national identity. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, pointed out that the festivities observed by the Kadazan, Dusun, Murut, Rungus, Dayak, and other ethnic communities in Sabah and Sarawak reflect gratitude for a bountiful harvest while preserving cultural values and traditions across generations.

Ahmad Zahid further emphasized that the nation's cultural richness and diversity are among the key attractions of Visit Malaysia Year 2026, showcasing the beauty of Malaysia to the world, while reinforcing the spirit of unity that has long been the foundation of the nation's strength. He expressed hope that this year's Kaamatan Festival and Gawai Dayak celebrations would bring joy and blessings to all Malaysians, particularly those in Sabah and Sarawak, concluding his message with "Kotobian Tadau Tagazo Do Kaamatan and Gayu Guru Gerai Nyamai!"
