Johor bahru: Johor Specialist Hospital (JSH), part of the KPJ Healthcare Berhad (KPJ Healthcare) network, has become the first hospital in Malaysia to adopt the ZEISS KINEVO 900 S Robotic Visualisation System in neurosurgery. KPJ Healthcare President and Managing Director Chin Keat Chyuan announced that the system is applied across three specialised areas at JSH, namely neurosurgery, spinal surgery, and combined endoscopic microsurgery.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Chin Keat Chyuan emphasized that this move marks a crucial step in enhancing surgical capabilities and expanding advanced treatment options for patients in Malaysia. He stated, “Every step we take is guided by our commitment to Care for Life. By introducing this system at JSH, we are advancing surgical capabilities and building the next generation of specialists so that patients receive care that is high-quality and forward-looking.”
The statement further noted that Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr. Sharon Casilda Theophilus and her team recently executed a minimally invasive procedure using the new system to remove a tumour on the left side of a patient’s skull. According to her, the procedure, performed with Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr. Ahmad Khan, combined the robotic system with a surgical navigation platform for accurate visualisation and instrument guidance. Dr. Theophilus mentioned, “The system provides a clear view and steady control in delicate surgeries. It is also a valuable platform for guiding and training the next generation of neurosurgeons.”
The robotic visualisation system offers surgeons and their teams real-time shared three-dimensional 4K images, aiding teamwork and training during complex operations. The statement added that it assists in brain procedures such as aneurysm repair, pituitary tumours, and skull base surgery, as well as targeting biopsies, deep brain stimulation, spinal screw placement, and deformity correction.
The implementation of the advanced technology at JSH further strengthens subspecialty services and supports the development of Centres of Excellence under the KPJ Health System transformation, which integrates clinical care, research, and education.
