Johor Urges ASEAN to Convene Meeting on Haze Prevention

Johor:The Johor State Government is urging ASEAN nations to convene an emergency meeting focused on enhancing fire control, prevention measures, and hotspot monitoring in response to the ongoing haze situation.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi discussed this proposal during the State-Level Disaster Coordination Meeting. The meeting also addressed the risk of cross-border haze due to hotspot activities in Indonesia. Since August 25, Johor has been experiencing haze, with several areas recording Air Pollutant Index (API) readings at unhealthy and very unhealthy levels, which poses significant concerns for public health and daily life.

Latest data from the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC) indicate that 453 hotspots were detected in Kalimantan and 153 in Sumatra. These hotspots could exacerbate the haze if fires occur and smoke drifts across borders.

As of 400 pm today, the Malaysian Air Pollutant Index Management System (MyEQMS) reported that Pasir Gudang and Larkin had reached very unhealthy API levels, with readings of 202. Additionally, six other areas were classified as unhealthy Pengerang at 181, Batu Pahat and Kota Tinggi at 171 each, Kluang at 168, Tangkak at 159, and Segamat at 156.
