Johor Bahru: The Johor Green Development Committee has set a transportation policy to increase electric vehicle (EV) registrations in the state to 15,840 units by 2030, compared to the current 977 units. Johor Health and Environment Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon announced this ambitious target, highlighting the state’s commitment to advancing its green transportation infrastructure.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, to achieve this goal, the committee has set a target of establishing 1,245 EV charging stations by 2030. Currently, there are 377 charging stations in Johor. The increase in EV charging stations is expected to attract more EV users from Singapore, which is also transitioning to clean energy vehicles by 2030. Ling shared these plans with reporters following a Chinese New Year celebration with orphans and the underprivileged.
The policy mandates that every new commercial area must allocate a percentage of parking spaces equipped with EV charging stations. Additionally, the committee has agreed to promote both domestic and foreign investments in renewable energy. This initiative aims to generate 600 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy by 2030, a significant increase from the current 199 MW, as discussed in a meeting chaired by Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
Ling further explained that existing establishments such as hotels, factories, and homes would be encouraged to install equipment capable of generating renewable energy or adopt solar power solutions. Moreover, the committee has agreed to implement a climate change policy related to flood mitigation, requiring local authorities to consider flood risks before approving new projects.
The celebration attended by Ling was organized by Paragon Globe Bhd and Grand Paragon Hotel Johor Bahru, bringing joy to more than 150 children from orphanages and welfare centres around Johor Bahru.
