Johor Bahru: The Johor government has announced an ambitious plan to construct 80,000 units under the Johor Affordable Housing Scheme (RMMJ) by 2029. This initiative aims to provide affordable housing solutions to residents throughout the state.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi revealed that 16,845 housing units have already been completed, with an additional 14,000 units slated for completion by 2027. The plan includes constructing another 50,000 units by 2029, achieving the comprehensive target of 80,000 units for Johor residents.
To meet this goal, the state has collaborated with the Johor Housing Development Corporation (PKPJ) and district land offices to utilize unused government land for RMMJ homes. These homes are priced between RM80,000 and RM300,000. The next development phase will commence in Simpang Renggam and Kulai, setting a precedent for further projects in the state.
State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor emphasized that Johor residents without fixed incomes or official pay slips can still apply for housing loans to purchase RMMJ units. The financing is facilitated by Syarikat Jaminan Kredit Perumahan Berhad (SJKP), allowing applicants to use income from small businesses or self-employment if it is deposited into a bank account.
Bank transactions can be used as income statements, with the government serving as a guarantor as previously announced by the Prime Minister. An allocation of RM1 billion has been made for RMMJ housing loan applications, with expectations for this amount to grow alongside the RMMJ programme’s expansion through 2029.
