Johor bahru: The Johor State Fatwa Committee has established the zakat fitrah (personal tithe) rates at RM8, RM10, and RM20 for the current year.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, State Islamic Affairs Committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid explained that these rates are determined based on the price of rice commonly consumed by Muslims in Johor, using the measurement of one Baghdad gantang (2.6kg). The rice prices and usage rates have been compiled from data provided by the Ministry of Agriculture's Paddy Control Division as well as local wholesalers and retailers.
Mohd Fared elaborated that the RM8 rate is applicable to Muslims whose daily staple includes local super special, parboiled, broken, and brown rice, whereas the RM10 rate is set for those who consume imported rice varieties such as white rice from Thailand, Pakistan, and Vietnam. The RM20 rate targets those consuming imported rice varieties like basmati and super fragrant rice.
These details were shared during an event at the Iskandar Islamic Centre, where the 1447H/2026M zakat fitrah rates were officially announced. Muslims in Johor can pay their zakat fitrah through 1,672 authorized amil (collectors) appointed by the Johor Islamic Religious Council (MAINJ). Payments can be made in cash, QR code, online via Zakat Johor Online Payment, and the Tulus app, or at MAINJ mobile counters throughout each district, as well as at MAINJ Urban Transformation Centre counters in Kotaraya and Pasir Gudang.
Mohd Fared emphasized that all Muslims residing in Johor, including foreign nationals, are required to fulfill their zakat fitrah obligations. The anticipated zakat fitrah collection for this year is RM27.33 million, based on an estimated 2.29 million Muslims in Johor expected to make payments. The projection considers the current economic conditions, with an estimated 29 percent paying RM8, 47 percent paying RM10, and 25 percent paying RM20.
