JKR to Extend Streetlight Hours Amid Haze Conditions

Accra:The Public Works Department (JKR) plans to increase the operating hours of streetlights by up to two hours in response to haze conditions, aiming to improve visibility for road users. This decision, initiated by JKR's Electrical Engineering Branch, is a response to the reduced visibility caused by haze, which heightens the risk of accidents.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Currently, streetlights with timer systems operate approximately from 7 pm to 7 am. Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan noted that these timers can be adjusted to extend lighting duration during hazy periods. He also intends to consult local authorities, including municipal councils and city halls, to promote similar actions.

The announcement follows a tragic incident where three siblings, aged eight to 18, died in a motorcycle accident with a lorry on Jalan Parit Haji Sirat, Kayu Ara Pason. The accident occurred under hazy conditions, contributing to poor visibility. Ahmad Maslan urged road users to be more vigilant and prioritize safe driving practices in such weather conditions.
