JBPM Encourages Student Corps Members to Join Auxiliary Firefighters

Kuala Lumpur:The Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) is urging members of the Student Corps Auxiliary Firefighter (PBBKS) to continue their service after graduation by joining the Auxiliary Firefighter (PBB) corps. This initiative aims to expand the pool of individuals equipped with skills to respond to emergencies and fires at an early stage.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, JBPM deputy director-general (Development), Datuk Nazili Mahmood, highlighted that there are currently 2,117 PBB personnel serving part-time at fire and rescue stations nationwide, with expectations for this number to grow. Since the PBBKS began in 2016, some members have continued to serve as PBB personnel at local fire and rescue stations after completing their studies.

Nazili emphasized the importance of these members acting as first responders to emergencies or fires, providing initial assistance before the arrival of on-duty firefighters. He explained that the training equips them with basic knowledge, skills, and awareness of fire safety and emergency assistance.

Beyond joining the PBB corps, former PBBKS members can also apply their skills in the public or private sectors by joining the Emergency Response Team (ERT) at their workplaces. Efforts to cultivate a fire-safety-conscious community begin with the Young Firefighters Club (KBoC) for children as young as five. This initiative continues through the Junior Firefighters programme in primary schools and the Fire and Rescue Cadet programme in secondary schools, eventually progressing to the Fire Brigade for diploma students and PBBKS in 12 public universities.

Nazili noted that the learning framework and co-curricular programmes align with international systems and standards used by Fire Safety Education instructors in developed countries.

Sitty Aishah Mohd Zahari, recognized as the Best Overall Trainee at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia's (UTHM) PBBKS 2026 Passing-Out Parade and Certification Ceremony, expressed her determination to join the fire and rescue service after her studies. She also plans to encourage her younger siblings in Perak to join uniformed bodies. The recognition as the best trainee has motivated her to succeed in future endeavors.

The ceremony certified 67 UTHM PBBKS members who completed 120 hours of firefighting training.
