Kuala Lumpur: The chief editor and deputy chief sub-editor of Sin Chew Daily are set to provide their statements to the police today concerning an error in the depiction of the national flag, Jalur Gemilang, on the newspaper’s front page.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain announced that the statements will be recorded at 1 pm at the Classified Crime Investigation Unit Office of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Bukit Aman Headquarters. The investigation focuses on the roles of the Chief Editor, who approved the publication, and the Deputy Chief Sub Editor, who designed the flag illustration.
The case is being pursued under Section 3(1)(c) of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963 and Section 4(1)(b) of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984. Razarudin confirmed receiving 13 reports about the issue from across the country.
The controversy arose when the Chinese-language newspaper published an illustration of the Jalur Gemilang missing the crescent moon on its front page. This occurred last Tuesday during coverage of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Malaysia. The illustration garnered criticism, including from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, who warned that the inaccuracy could provoke public sensitivities and is unacceptable.
In response, Sin Chew Daily issued an apology, attributing the mistake to an unintentional technical error.
