Penang: Part of Jalan Tanjong Tokong Lama, located in Tanjong Tokong, has been renamed Jalan Shaik Ibrahim to honor the contributions of the late Shaik Ibrahim, the former president of Persatuan Melayu Pulau Pinang (Pemenang), to the local community. Penang Infrastructure, Transport, and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari announced that the state government acted on requests from local residents to rename the road in recognition of Shaik Ibrahim's impact on the Penang community, particularly in Tanjong Tokong.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the road in question is a 124-meter stretch between Jalan Tanjong Tokong Lama and Jalan Tanjong Tokong. The application for the name change was presented at the State Committee on Geographical Names (JNNG) on December 4, 2025, and received approval from the State Executive Council (MMKN) on February 25. Zairil made these remarks while officiating the new road name.
Jalan Shaik Ibrahim had historical significance as the site of a morning market, a night market, and Madrasah at-Taqwa in 1925. This historical context suggests the name Jalan Shaik Ibrahim was previously used in the area. Referring to sources from Pemenang and the National Archives of Malaysia, the late Shaik Ibrahim, born in Tanjong Tokong, was a philanthropist who made substantial contributions to the local residents.
He also held positions as a newspaper editor and was recognized as a Justice of the Peace by both the British and Japanese governments during the 1940s. The legacy of service continued through Shaik Ibrahim's family, with his son, Datuk Mohamed Sopiee Shaik Ibrahim, serving as the general manager of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) from 1972 to 1974, and his grandson, Tan Sri Dr Mohammad Noordin Mohamed Sopiee, becoming a prominent journalist and national strategic thinker.
Zairil emphasized that the contributions of Shaik Ibrahim, along with the enduring legacy of his son and grandson, have significantly impacted national development and deserve remembrance by current and future generations.
