JAKIM Identifies 10 Active Deviant Teachings in Malaysia

Kuala lumpur: The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) has identified 10 active deviant teachings in the country, as announced by its director-general, Datuk Dr. Sirajuddin Suhaimee. These sects are not limited to any specific state but are known to move freely, seeking safe areas for recruiting followers.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr. Sirajuddin highlighted that some of these groups have even extended their operations overseas. Traditionally, such deviant teachings were easy to identify, but they have now adopted more subtle forms, such as modules or motivational programmes. One of the main challenges in addressing these teachings is their secretive nature, which complicates legal action against them.

Dr. Sirajuddin emphasized JAKIM's commitment to education and prevention, aiming to help the public identify deviations from true Islamic teachings. He stressed that it is crucial to focus not just on the names of these groups but also on their practices and beliefs to prevent public involvement. He argued that while strict enforcement is necessary, a harmonious and educational approach proves more effective in the long term.

He further explained that when people recognize a practice as wrong, they are more likely to avoid it. Thus, JAKIM is not only imposing bans but also providing guidance and alternatives to steer individuals away from deviant teachings.

In addition to these efforts, Dr. Sirajuddin noted that JAKIM is collaborating with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to monitor online content related to deviant beliefs. He cautioned that not all information available online is accurate and urged the public to seek guidance from authorities like JAKIM or their state religious departments. A coordinated effort among the government, state religious authorities, and the public is essential for curbing deviant beliefs and safeguarding Islamic faith.
