Kuala Lumpur: Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob was at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters today to provide his statement regarding an investigation into a corruption and money laundering case linked to him. His arrival was noted when his vehicle entered the MACC office compound at 9.46 am.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ismail Sabri, who served as the ninth Prime Minister, was initially scheduled to give his statement on March 7. However, this was postponed due to health concerns following his collapse at home on February 21, which led to his hospitalization at a private medical center.
On March 3, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki stated that Ismail Sabri was identified as a suspect in the investigation. The case involves the discovery of approximately RM170 million in various currencies found in a safe house. Additionally, 16 kilograms of pure gold bars, valued at nearly RM7 million, were seized.
The MACC has taken measures to assist in the investigation by freezing 13 bank accounts containing over RM2 million. The inquiry is primarily focused on the expenditure and acquisition of funds for promotional and publicity purposes during Ismail Sabri’s tenure as Prime Minister.
