Glasgow: National weightlifter Irene Jane Henry is determined to make the most of her Commonwealth Games debut when she competes in the women's 48 kilogrammes (kg) category tomorrow.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the 21-year-old plans to surpass her personal best record of an overall lift of 169 kg and to secure at least a silver medal in her very first Commonwealth Games. "I want to improve my personal record and if possible, I'd like to win a medal. My aim is to win at least a silver medal. My best lift previously is 169 kg so for tomorrow's competition, I'm targeting a total of over 170 kg," she expressed.
Irene's spirits are buoyed by the prayers, support, and messages from her family, which are also a source of strength for her at this crucial point just before she takes to the stage tomorrow. "They always tell me to give my best, especially tomorrow and to keep my morale up. That's what my mom told me," she shared, adding that she is fired up to give her all to bring glory to Malaysia.
Irene did admit to having the jitters but said that she would not let it affect her performance. "There is some nervousness and a bit of apprehension, but I'm happy to be here. Usually, I would control my breathing and also listen to music or watch a film to calm myself," she added with a smile.
Weightlifting, which begins tomorrow at Scottish Event Campus (SEC) Armadillo here, will last for five days.
