Inter-Monsoon Phase Brings Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain to Malaysia

Kuala lumpur: The Monsoon Transition Phase is set to commence this Sunday and is expected to last until May, resulting in thunderstorms and heavy rain accompanied by strong winds in various regions in Malaysia over brief periods.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Dr. Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip has indicated that the areas anticipated to be impacted include the west and interior of Peninsular Malaysia, the southern and central parts of Sarawak, and the western region of Sabah. This phase signifies the conclusion of the 2025/2026 Northeast Monsoon which started on November 13 last year. During this period, the country is likely to experience weak winds from multiple directions, which may foster the development of thunderstorm clouds.

Dr. Mohd Hisham stated that this weather condition usually results in heavy rains and strong winds over short durations, predominantly occurring in the evenings and early nights. He also warned that the weather phenomenon might lead to tornadoes and hailstones, further causing flash floods, landslides, water surges, fallen trees, lightning strikes, and damage to unstable structures.

The public is urged to seek shelter inside houses or buildings and to avoid open areas, water reservoirs, and tall structures like trees and towers. Additionally, staying clear of electrical conductors such as electric poles and iron ladders is advised. People are encouraged to remain vigilant regarding weather forecasts and warnings issued by MetMalaysia, accessible via the official website, the myCuaca mobile application, and the department's official social media channels.

For more information, individuals can contact the department's hotline at 1-300-22-1638.
