Jakarta: Indonesia is optimistic about achieving US$20 billion in bilateral trade with Thailand by 2030 following the adoption of the Indonesia-Thailand Strategic Partnership Roadmap 2026-2030 on Monday. President Prabowo Subianto stated that the roadmap, adopted during the second Leaders' Consultation with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul at the Merdeka Palace, would serve as a shared framework to strengthen bilateral cooperation. According to BERNAMA News Agency, the roadmap aims to expand investment, improve market access, and strengthen partnerships between businesses. This includes the establishment of the first Joint Trade Commission (JTC) in the history of both nations as a mechanism to discuss business opportunities and address trade barriers. Anutin's visit to Jakarta marked his first official trip to Indonesia since taking office as Thailand's 32nd prime minister in September 2025 and the first official visit by a Thai prime minister to Indonesia in 15 years. President Prabowo emphasized th at the meeting was the second Leaders' Consultation since the countries elevated their bilateral ties to a Strategic Partnership during his visit to Bangkok last year. The discussions also focused on enhancing cooperation in food security, covering agricultural technology, logistics, food processing, and supply chain resilience. On energy, both countries supported convening the Indonesia-Thailand Energy Forum to strengthen energy security and accelerate the transition towards sustainable energy through collaboration between governments and businesses. The two nations also committed to strengthening cooperation in the digital economy, including promoting the use of local currency transactions to improve the efficiency of bilateral trade and investment. Prabowo highlighted the potential to leverage respective strengths in the halal industry to develop regional and global halal value chains. The meeting also resulted in the signing of a memorandum of understanding on education to strengthen human capital devel opment. Additional agreements were made between the Tourism Authority of Thailand and TransNusa on tourism and connectivity, as well as between Bio-Axel and Pro Konsilium on an organic waste processing project. Anutin, in his opening remarks, noted that Indonesia was Thailand's fourth-largest trading partner within ASEAN and emphasized the need to increase bilateral trade. He stated that Thailand was ready to host the inaugural Thailand-Indonesia JTC at the commerce minister level to facilitate greater trade and investment and set more ambitious bilateral trade targets. On food security, Anutin reiterated Thailand's commitment to remaining a reliable supplier of high-quality rice to Indonesia while seeking greater access for Thai agricultural products, meat, dairy products, and agricultural machinery in the Indonesian market. He also expressed Thailand's interest in increasing imports of Indonesian urea fertilizer and called for a renewal of the mutual recognition agreement on halal certification before its expiration in November.
