Merdeka: Independence is not just about celebrating the moment the country gained its freedom, but rather a responsibility that must be maintained for the sake of peace, harmony and ensuring Malaysia continues to move forward. Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that throughout the 69 years of independence, Malaysia had gone through various challenges and changes, but the people's ability to set aside differences, respect diversity and prioritise national harmony remained important.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Chow stated, 'Each time we shout 'Merdeka', we are not merely commemorating the moment of freedom, but also reminding ourselves that independence is a trust that must continue to be upheld for the sake of peace, to preserve harmony and to ensure Malaysia continues moving forward.' He highlighted that Penang was built by people of various races, religions, cultures, and backgrounds, and this diversity is a strength that should be preserved. In conjunction with the 69th National Day celebration, Chow emphasized the importance of respecting one another and working together to build a better future based on the Penang2030 Vision.
Chow noted that the National Day theme of 'Malaysia MADANI: Kesejahteraan Dinikmati' carries the message that progress should not be solely measured by economic figures but should translate into a better quality of life for the people. This includes quality job opportunities, affordable homes, manageable living costs, and a safe and sustainable environment for families.
In line with this aspiration, Chow expressed Penang's commitment to the MADANI Government's agenda, particularly in ensuring the state's development grows without neglecting the socio-economic development of its people. Despite Penang's small land area, its contribution to Malaysia is significant through the industrial, technology, education, tourism, and innovation sectors, and the state will continue to play a role as one of the drivers of national growth.
Chow concluded by affirming the state's resolve in supporting the Malaysia MADANI agenda, strengthening Penang's development, and ensuring the benefits of progress are enjoyed by all. 'Although we have different faces, we share one spirit. Although our stories may be different, we are one state, and this is our Penang,' he added.
