Immigration Dept Denies Allegations Of Abuse At Selangor Detention Depot

Selangor: The Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) has denied claims of abuse at its detention depot in Selangor, which went viral on social media today. Immigration Director-General Datuk Zakaria Shaaban stated that all detainees are managed in accordance with the set procedures.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Zakaria explained that if any disciplinary breaches occur by detainees, action would be taken in accordance with the procedures once the offence is confirmed by the commander through an investigation under the Immigration Depot Management Regulations 2003. He emphasized that internal checks at the Immigration depot revealed no records of the alleged incident. The facility is equipped with closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, which showed no suspicious activity.

Zakaria urged the public to provide specific information through the department’s official complaint channels to facilitate investigations and ensure appropriate action. He assured that the JIM will not compromise or protect any officer found guilty of misconduct.

The allegations of abuse surfaced on social media after an individual claimed that their sibling, an officer at the depot, witnessed an incident involving detainees. Zakaria also mentioned that a visit by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to the Immigration detention depot would require approval from the JIM Headquarters.
