Bukit aman: International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) political science lecturer Prof Dr Syaza Farhana Mohamad Shukri stated that her visit to Bukit Aman on March 10 was solely to serve as a witness in a police investigation related to a media report that quoted her statement in 2024.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Syaza Farhana clarified that she was not involved as a suspect in the investigation concerning her views published in a South China Morning Post report on December 26, 2024, about the involvement of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in the Pulau Batu Puteh matter. She emphasized that the police summoned her strictly in a witness capacity. The session with the police lasted approximately one and a half hours.
She expressed her initial surprise at being called in, stating she questioned the purpose of the summons. The police assured her that her presence was needed only in the capacity of a witness, she told Bernama during a phone interview today.
Furthermore, the IIUM Political Science Students' Association issued a statement today, questioning the rationale behind Bukit Aman's action. They emphasized that Syaza Farhana's comments were made with good intentions, reflecting the principles of academic freedom in Malaysia and the autonomy of universities from political pressure.
