Kuala lumpur: Malaysia and Hungary are embarking on a collaborative research initiative to study indigenous livestock breeds, aiming to discover genetic and physical traits that enable these animals to thrive in increasingly challenging farming environments. This initiative is part of a proposed five-year action plan between the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) and the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences (MATE).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Associate Professor Dr. Istvan Egerszegi from MATE stated that the research will focus on indigenous ruminants and poultry. The study aims to carry out phenotypic and genotypic characterization of these animals to identify special characteristics that allow them to adapt to hot and humid climates. Dr. Egerszegi shared these insights during an exclusive interview at the Hungarian pavilion at the Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism Exhibition (MAHA) 2026.
The MARDI-MATE Action Plan was exchanged at MAHA 2026 in the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) to bolster agricultural innovation and food security. Egerszegi, who also serves on MATE's Tropical and Subtropical Development Board, emphasized that these findings could also benefit Hungary's livestock industry, which is grappling with rising summer temperatures, drought, and feed production challenges.
Egerszegi noted that indigenous breeds often show greater resilience, thriving in harsher environments while consuming lower-quality feed. He highlighted that during favorable conditions, these local breeds can produce high-quality meat or milk, depending on the species and breed.
Beyond research, MATE and MARDI plan to organize scientific seminars and seek funding for high-quality collaborative studies. MATE also intends to invite a Malaysian researcher to speak at its 10th Animal Breeding Scientific Day in G¶d¶llo, Hungary, this November, which focuses on climate-focused animal science.
Moreover, MATE is exploring potential collaborations with Taylor's University, Universiti Malaya, and the Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA) on space farming and satellite-based agricultural monitoring. MAHA 2026 marks Hungary's first participation in the biennial exhibition, with its pavilion showcasing agricultural heritage and educational opportunities, including the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship for Malaysian students to study in Hungary.
