Kuala Lumpur:The recent announcement of Budget 2027 includes a significant increase in healthcare funding, aiming to expedite access to treatment, reduce waiting times, and ensure equitable access to health services.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, public health expert Assoc. Prof Dr. Rosliza Abdul Manaf from Universiti Putra Malaysia highlighted that the effectiveness of the national healthcare system should be judged not just by funding or technology, but by how these investments translate into equitable service delivery. She praised the government's decision to offer permanent appointments to over 9,000 contract doctors in 2027, emphasizing the importance of addressing medical staff shortages in areas with high disease burdens and local needs.
The MediAsas scheme, introduced in the budget, aims to promote shared financial responsibility for healthcare, although it must balance affordability with maintaining adequate retirement savings, Dr. Rosliza noted.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad reaffirmed the commitment to utilizing the healthcare allocation for excellent service delivery, benefiting all Malaysians under the MADANI Government.
The Association of Private Hospitals Malaysia (APHM) supports the initiative to enhance public-private sector collaboration. APHM President, Datuk Dr Kuljit Singh, stated that optimizing existing resources and expertise could significantly reduce waiting times and improve outcomes, particularly for urgent cases like cancer.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, while presenting Budget 2027, allocated RM47.7 billion for the Health Ministry and reiterated efforts to resolve the contract doctor issue by offering more permanent positions. Since 2023, over 15,000 contract doctors have been appointed to permanent roles, including 4,000 this year. In 2027, more than 9,000 will receive permanent posts, ensuring those completing their housemanships secure medical officer positions.
