Kuching: Eight areas in Sarawak and one in Selangor recorded Air Pollution Index (API) readings at unhealthy levels as of 6 pm today, according to the Air Pollution Index Management System (APIMS).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, in Sarawak, three new areas, namely Miri with an API reading of 119, Sarikei at 152, and Sri Aman at 154, recorded unhealthy levels due to cross-border haze this afternoon. This development brings the total number of affected areas to eight, an increase from five earlier in the morning. The areas that previously recorded unhealthy API readings were Kuching with 156, Samarahan at 157, Serian with a reading of 169, Bintulu at 154, and Samalaju at 152.

In the Peninsula, Johan Setia in Selangor is the only area currently experiencing an unhealthy level of air quality, with an API reading of 153. Meanwhile, 57 areas across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak are maintaining a moderate level of air quality. Additionally, Langkawi in Kedah and Kangar in Perlis have each recorded API readings that are classified as good.

According to APIMS, an API reading between 0 and 50 is categorized as good, 51 to 100 as moderate, 101 to 200 as unhealthy, 201 to 300 as very unhealthy, and above 301 as hazardous.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) in a significant weather forecast notice indicated that hot and less rainy weather is anticipated in most areas of Borneo, including Sarawak, until August 14. According to MetMalaysia, the influence of winds from the south and the expected high number of hotspots in neighboring countries could potentially cause transboundary haze and reduce visibility, particularly in southern Sarawak.
