Haze Forces Closure Of Six Schools In Tebedu

Tebedu: Six schools in Tebedu, Sarawak were closed today after the Air Pollutant Index (API) reading exceeded 200. The Sarawak Education Department (JPNS) stated that the affected schools include Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sejijag, SK Sungai Sameran, SK Tepoi, SK Entubuh, SK Temong, and SK Tema.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the closure is a preventive measure implemented in accordance with the provisions and guidelines of the Ministry of Education (MOE). The priority is to ensure the safety, health, and well-being of pupils and the entire school community. The department emphasized that schools are not required to wait for specific instructions from the District Education Office (PPD) or JPNS to close if the API reading in their respective areas or districts exceeds 200.

Principals and headmasters are urged to act immediately based on the latest API reading in their respective areas. Schools must promptly inform the PPD and JPNS of any closure for coordination, monitoring, and record-keeping purposes. This approach aims to enable protective measures for pupils and the school community to be implemented swiftly without delay.

Home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) will continue during the temporary school closures to ensure that pupils can continue their studies without disruption. Schools must ensure effective communication with parents and guardians, while also giving due attention to the welfare and health of pupils throughout the closure period.

Furthermore, schools are reminded to continuously monitor the latest API readings in their respective areas and take appropriate action in accordance with the MOE's provisions.
