Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasized that the government will continue to intensify efforts to combat illegal gambling activities in the country. Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, noted that enforcement actions against such activities have led to seizures amounting to billions of ringgit.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar acknowledged the challenges in curbing illegal gambling in Malaysia, particularly because online gambling operators are often based overseas. Furthermore, the electronic mechanisms they use are sophisticated, allowing them to quickly open and shut operations.
During a session in the Dewan Rakyat, the Prime Minister addressed a supplementary question from Fong Kui Lun (PH-Bukit Bintang) on whether government action against illegal gambling operators could complement efforts to plug revenue leakages, ensuring that fiscal consolidation does not rely solely on reducing subsidies.
Anwar also mentioned that beyond enforcement measures, the government is focusing on enhancing public accountability and awareness regarding actions that contravene the country's laws.
