Government Reviews Syariah Judges’ Pay Scheme to Align with Civil Court Judges

Kuala lumpur: The government is considering implementing a Syariah Judges Remuneration Act aimed at aligning the pay schemes of Syariah judges with those of their civil court counterparts, as part of efforts to strengthen the judiciary's authority. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Dr. Zulkifli Hasan announced this initiative during the debate on the motion of thanks for the royal address in the Dewan Rakyat.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr. Zulkifli explained that the Department of Syariah Judiciary Malaysia (JKSM) is evaluating the necessity of such an Act to promote judicial independence and reinforce the credibility of Syariah Courts. The government is also revising existing laws to enhance the Syariah legal framework and is committed to expanding the courts' jurisdiction as per the Federal Constitution, with initiatives such as the establishment of the Malaysian Syariah Judicial Academy (AKSM).

Dr. Zulkifli highlighted the government's dedication to fortifying the Syariah Courts' jurisdiction through phased measures, including the Special Committee to Review the Competency of the State Legislative Assembly under the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs. Additionally, in addressing health concerns, he noted that the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia supports using Friday sermons to raise awareness about the health risks associated with high sugar consumption.

He mentioned the importance of maintaining good health as it impacts the ability of Muslims to perform religious duties, stressing that while franchise outlets adhere to halal standards, promoting healthy eating aligns with the objectives of Islamic law, Maqasid Syariah, and helps control sugar intake.
