Government Prepares to Publish Royal Commission of Inquiry Report on Tabung Haji

Kuala lumpur: The government is poised to release the final report of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on Tabung Haji (TH) soon, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar stated that he would consult with Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar to determine if the report must be referred to the Cabinet before its release. Should there be no need for Cabinet consultation, Anwar expressed readiness to release the report immediately, emphasizing the public's right to be informed.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar explained that the decision to release the report considers Tabung Haji's progress in its recovery efforts. He highlighted the importance of public awareness regarding the inquiry's findings. Previously, the Cabinet had decided to publish the report, but concerns were raised due to TH's ongoing recovery process at that time. Anwar noted that under the leadership of TH Chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Hussain and his team, significant improvements have been made, thus alleviating earlier concerns.

The Prime Minister underscored the importance of transparency, stating that the people deserve to know the contents of the report now that TH has stabilized. Anwar assured that the publication would not pose risks to depositors and savers as TH has strengthened its operations.

In a related development, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Dr. Zulkifli Hasan mentioned that a decision on the report's disclosure would be addressed in a Cabinet meeting. This follows confusion and allegations surrounding the sale of TH's strategic assets by a former Treasury secretary-general.

Anwar commended Rashid and his team for transforming TH into a well-managed institution characterized by transparency and proper audits.
