Government Plans to Strengthen Semiconductor Sector and Boost Local Technology

Kuala Lumpur:Selangor The government is set to implement a comprehensive strategy involving all ministries and agencies to advance the semiconductor sector by fostering local technology development and enhancing international cooperation, announced Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Liew emphasized the need to bolster the relationship between the financial sector and the technology industry to cultivate more local companies with proprietary technology, particularly in the semiconductor field. He highlighted the sector's critical role in the production of phones, watches, electric vehicles, and artificial intelligence applications.

Liew noted that these efforts align with the nation's industrial development goals as outlined in the National Semiconductor Strategy and the New Industrial Master Plan 2030. He underscored the importance of transitioning from a "Made in Malaysia" to a "Made by Malaysia" approach to empower local companies to innovate and own their technology.

The Deputy Minister also described this initiative as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to elevate the Malaysian economy to a level comparable to South Korea's in the coming decades. He called for increased collaboration across industries and regions, emphasizing the importance of ensuring Malaysian technology is secure and trusted amidst global geopolitical conflicts.

The Selangor AI and Semiconductor Summit 2026 (AiSEM@Selangor), now in its 11th edition, is underway from October 14 to 17, 2026, at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre and Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur. It is a key event within the Selangor International Business Summit 2026.
