Government Issues Warning to Bus Operators Over Unauthorized Fare Increases During Aidilfitri

Jerantut: The Ministry of Transport has issued a stern warning to express bus companies, cautioning against unauthorized fare hikes for economy-class buses in the lead-up to the Aidilfitri festive season. The ministry has threatened strict actions, including the potential revocation of licenses, against operators who deliberately increase ticket prices.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister Anthony Loke has stated that the ministry has received public complaints regarding fare increases by express bus operators, particularly on routes from the capital to the East Coast. Loke emphasized the distinction between economy and executive bus services, noting that while economy-class fares are regulated, executive bus ticket prices are not. However, any excessive price increases in either category will prompt an investigation.

Loke has directed the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) to investigate the companies implicated in these fare hikes. He reiterated that express bus operators are only permitted to impose a 10 percent surcharge during festive seasons, a policy that has been in place for the past 20 years and applies from one week before to one week after major celebrations.

In addition to addressing fare concerns, Loke discussed integrated enforcement operations for Aidilfitri, which are set to take place nationwide from March 24 to April 8. These operations aim to monitor, detect, and take action against road users violating traffic laws, with 36 hotspot locations identified in Pahang alone.

The minister also highlighted the helmet exchange programme, which aims to raise awareness about the importance of wearing helmets that meet safety standards. As part of this initiative, 500 helmets were distributed to residents in Jerantut, encouraging motorcyclists and their pillion riders to replace unsuitable helmets with safer options.
