Government Initiatives to Support Media Companies Outlined by Communications Minister

Melaka: The government is implementing several initiatives to help media companies remain operational, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He highlighted ongoing efforts, including a collaboration with Google through Project Sigma, designed to explore new methods of content delivery tailored for younger audiences.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister Fahmi emphasized the evolving media consumption habits of the younger generation, who no longer rely on traditional media like newspapers or television at fixed times, but rather consume information on-demand across various platforms. He acknowledged that the primary challenge facing media companies today is monetization, a topic slated for discussion during the upcoming National Journalists' Day celebration.

The minister made these remarks after presenting a contribution from the Tabung KasihHAWANA fund to Ishak Mohamed Salleh, a former editor-in-chief of Melaka Hari Ini, who is currently facing health challenges. The event, held at Ishak's residence in Taman Bukit Cheng, was also attended by Communications Ministry Deputy Secretary-General (Strategic Communications and Creative Industry) Nik Kamaruzaman Nik Husin and Bernama Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj.

Fahmi further noted that the government is actively engaging with media companies to gather ideas and provide support during the transition process, aiming to bolster the role of journalists. He stressed the necessity of developing a sustainable business model that can ensure financial stability for media companies and secure employment within the sector.
