Kuala lumpur: The government, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), is actively engaging with stakeholders to discuss the proposed minimum age limit of 16 for social media accounts. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil stated that the initiative involves briefings and feedback collection to address concerns while focusing on safeguarding children and families online.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Datuk Fahmi emphasized that the government's goal is not to restrict freedom of expression among children but to ensure their safety on the internet. He clarified that children could still access social media under parental supervision, preventing unsupervised account creation that could expose them to risks like contact from predators.
The move has the support of Bukit Aman's Criminal Investigation Department, highlighting the dangers of unsupervised social media use by minors. Fahmi cited serious cases, including a sexual assault involving a 15-year-old victim in Sabah and cyberbullying incidents leading to tragic outcomes.
Datuk Fahmi expressed openness to discussions with opposing parties to explore different perspectives and proposals, reaffirming the priority of creating a safe online environment for children.
