G20 Must Move Beyond Rhetoric To Address Global Trade Inequities – PM Anwar

Cape town: Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim urged G20 member states to move beyond rhetoric and take concrete steps to address longstanding global trade inequities, particularly those affecting countries in the Global South. He noted that while recent G20 discussions have shown an ambitious push for broader consensus on multilateral trade, investment mechanisms, and closing economic gaps between nations, tangible progress remains limited.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, emphasized that countries in Europe and the Global North should utilize mechanisms within the G20 to tackle the gross inequities that have impacted the Global South. He highlighted the unaddressed unfair trading practices and exploitation of poorer countries’ resources.

Anwar stated that the time for mere verbal commitments is over, and there is a need for concrete action. He expressed the desire to move beyond the colonial or post-colonial mindset, acknowledging the advancement and capabilities of these countries to articulate their visions.

While recognizing the challenges ahead, he reiterated the necessity of voicing these concerns strongly at global forums. He advocated for a consensus on the issue, emphasizing the importance of expressing strong views to drive change.

On Malaysia’s potential membership in BRICS, Anwar mentioned the support from major players like South Africa, China, India, and Russia. He noted that Malaysia would proceed with the membership process while stressing the importance of BRICS focusing on new technology and increasing intra-regional trade, along with maintaining engagement with the United States and Europe.

During the 30-minute interview, the Prime Minister also discussed BRICS, ASEAN, Malaysia-South Africa relations, Malaysia’s economic focus, and social policy. The G20 comprises members from various nations including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, and others, with this year’s summit being the first held on African soil.
