Future of Teams in 2025-2026 Super League Hinges on April Decision

Kuala Lumpur: The number of teams set to participate in the upcoming 2025-2026 Super League season will only be determined after April 30. Malaysian Football League (MFL) acting chief executive officer, Mohd Shazli Shaik Mohd, stated that the First Instance Body (FIB) will convene to decide which teams are eligible to receive a national license to compete in the Super League.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohd Shazli mentioned that the league is in communication with the teams involved, including those facing financial challenges, to ensure they complete and submit the necessary documents via the club licensing system. He expressed optimism that existing teams could meet the club licensing requirements.

Mohd Shazli noted that the ongoing meetings with the clubs have been positive, but emphasized that the clubs need to work diligently to fulfill licensing requirements by the end of April. The urgency stems from comments made by the Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, who recently suggested that teams like Sri Pahang FC and Kedah Darul Aman (KDA) FC might not compete next season due to financial mismanagement.

The possibility of Brunei DPMM returning to the Super League remains uncertain, with further announcements expected soon. The team, currently playing in the Singapore Premier League, previously competed in the Super League during the 2005/2006 season and finished in third place.

Mohd Shazli also mentioned that the MFL is open to inviting foreign teams to join the league, subject to approvals from the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and FIFA.

In addition, the status of the AFC license application for teams like JDT, Selangor FC, Sabah FC, Penang FC, KDA, and Terengganu FC will be announced after the end of the month.
