Focus on Men’s Mental Health Crucial Amid Rising Mental Disorder Statistics in Malaysia

Kuala lumpur: The conversation surrounding mental health, particularly among men, is often met with resistance and discomfort. In Malaysia, this stigma continues to be a significant barrier, even as mental health issues become more prevalent. Statistics reveal a concerning trend, with the prevalence of mental disorders increasing from 10% in 1996 to 29% in 2015. Furthermore, 2023 data indicates that around one million Malaysians aged 16 and above suffer from depression, more than doubling the number from 2019.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the mental health situation in Malaysia is alarming, especially among men. Traditional societal expectations dictate that men should be strong and unemotional, leading many to internalize these pressures. Men are often discouraged from expressing emotions or seeking help, fearing ridicule or criticism. This societal conditioning results in what is known as masculine discrepancy stress, exacerbating the mental and emotional strain they already experience.

Men face additional pressures as primary breadwinners, often dealing with financial stress and the demands of both work and home life. The portrayal of aspirational lifestyles on social media further compounds these pressures, creating an overwhelming environment for men who are already vulnerable to societal expectations.

Recognizing the signs of mental health struggles in men is challenging, as these issues often develop gradually and are easily overlooked. Men may exhibit increased irritability, anger, or aggression, engage in risk-taking or escapist behaviors, and show controlling or abusive tendencies. They may also turn to alcohol, drugs, or compulsive activities like gambling or excessive work to cope.

Dr. Serena suggests that family, friends, and colleagues can play a crucial role in supporting men experiencing mental health challenges. Listening carefully and being present can provide opportunities for men to open up about their feelings. Offering support, such as helping to arrange appointments or suggesting virtual therapy options, can also encourage men to seek help.

Understanding mental health as an essential aspect of overall well-being, comparable to physical health, is crucial. Men should be encouraged to care for their mental health as they do their physical health, seeking professional help when necessary. Simple measures like talking to friends, exercising, and ensuring adequate rest can promote a healthy mental state.
