Flag War Intensifies as Melaka State Election Approaches

Melaka:The excitement for the 16th Melaka State Election is mounting, with a "flag war" among political parties becoming increasingly visible along roadsides and in public hotspots following the completion of the nomination process yesterday.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, a survey found that political party flags have been erected in urban areas such as Kota Laksamana, Banda Hilir, Semabok, Duyong, Bukit Katil, and Ayer Molek. These flags represent several parties, including Pakatan Harapan (PH), Barisan Nasional (BN), Perikatan Nasional (PN), Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama), and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).

Some parties are reusing flags from previous state elections in Johor and Negeri Sembilan for the Melaka polls. Melaka DAP chairman Khoo Poay Tiong noted that most flags were still in good condition, making their reuse a cost-saving measure. He emphasized the importance of campaign materials such as flags, posters, and banners to inform voters about PH's participation and candidates in specific areas.

Khoo mentioned that the installation of PH flags, particularly in DAP-contested areas, is being done in stages, focusing on locations with high public traffic. Approximately 2,000 flags will be installed in each state constituency contested by the party, with the possibility of increasing this number if necessary. The campaign will also include billboards and buntings based on polling district areas and needs.

BN candidate for the Duyong state seat, Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem, revealed that flags displayed in the constituency were acquired from friends in Negeri Sembilan and Johor, where state elections had concluded. He stated that the flag installation in Duyong is ongoing and is expected to finish within the next two to three days.

A total of 79 candidates will contest 28 state seats in the 16th Melaka state election following the close of nominations. Early voting is scheduled for November 10, with polling day set for November 14.
