Bukit Changgang Flood Bank Project Nears Early Completion

Bukit Changgang:One of the two flood bank strengthening projects in Kampung Rancangan Tanah Belia (RTB) Bukit Changgang is 80 percent complete and is expected to be finalized next week, ahead of its initial January 2027 deadline.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the project, managed by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS), utilizes the Schematic Precast System (SPS) to reinforce an existing earth embankment that frequently suffers erosion from strong currents in Sungai Langat.

Universal Precast System's project engineer, Luqman Hakim Omar, stated that the work commenced on September 23 and is now in its final phase. The remaining tasks, including concreting, are projected to be completed by the weekend, with the site handover to JPS scheduled for next week. The project aims to protect residents before the onset of the monsoon season.

The structure, standing six meters high, consists of four concrete panels each measuring 1.5 meters in height. It is designed to withstand river overflow and prevent water from entering the village, with the Langat River's danger level cited at 4.9 meters. The soil at the site was identified as weak due to waste mixture, posing a high risk of embankment failure. The SPS method addresses this by compacting the soil enclosed by concrete panels, reinforced with geotextile and geogrid, ensuring stability without the need for piles.

RTB Bukit Changgang village head Ahmad Fuad Alias expressed residents' gratitude for the project, hoping it will prevent further embankment breaches and flooding, which have repeatedly damaged property and disrupted lives. Although some residents initially questioned the new technology's strength due to the absence of piles, engineers' explanations have reassured them.

The area has suffered from frequent flooding, including major incidents in December 2021 and multiple occurrences in 2022 and 2023. Heavy rains in late June led to an embankment breach affecting approximately 3,000 residents. In response, the Selangor state government allocated RM7 million for SPS-based repairs and strengthening works, with the overall project expected to conclude by January next year. The Northeast Monsoon, forecasted to begin on October 27, is anticipated to bring three to five episodes of continuous heavy rain from November to January.
