Firm Action Against Civil Servant Misconduct To Prevent Recurrence – Chief Secretary

Ipoh: The government consistently takes firm action in cases involving civil servant misconduct, especially those related to abuse of power and corruption, said Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar. He said this was crucial as such misconduct carries significant implications for the country’s image.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Shamsul Azri emphasized the importance of taking firm action to ensure that similar incidents do not recur. He made these remarks during his speech at the Perak-level Taat Setia MADANI Roadshow, attended by about 2,000 participants. The event was officiated by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, with Perak State Secretary Datuk Ahmad Suaidi Abdul Rahim and Akademi Kenegaraan Malaysia (AKM) director-general Datuk Dr Roslan Hussin also in attendance.

Shamsul Azri urged civil servants to consistently uphold the principles of accountability, professionalism, and responsibility in their duties. He highlighted that every civil servant plays a vital role in shaping public perception of the government and civil service as a whole. Furthermore, he stressed that integrity, transparency, and effectiveness are the pillars of a trustworthy civil service.

Several approaches and guidelines have been introduced to ensure these values are upheld, including directives and integrity regulations that prohibit civil servants from making unauthorized statements on social media. Shamsul Azri clarified that this measure is not meant to restrict freedom of expression but to ensure the information shared with the public is accurate, responsible, and not misleading.

He further stated that civil servants must serve with sincerity, not seeking recognition or praise, but rather fulfilling the trust placed in them. Additionally, they should be open-minded, willing to accept feedback, listen to views, and address weaknesses to stay connected with the people.

Shamsul Azri cautioned against the attitude of shirking duties and questioning responsibilities, as it creates distance and alienation between the people and the administration. He underscored the importance of civil servants understanding the hardships faced by the populace, be they farmers or urban dwellers.
