Kuala lumpur: Permission has been given for the ownership and import of 'Pop-Pop' and 'Happy Boom' fireworks for Chinese New Year, subject to permits from the relevant district police chief and compliance with set conditions. Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail stated that matters related to the import, sale, storage, and use of fireworks fall under the Explosives Act 1957, the Explosives Rules 1923, and the Minor Offences Act 1955.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, firecrackers are categorized as explosives under Section 2 of the Explosives Act 1957 [Act 207] as their components include substances that can explode or produce explosive materials or chemicals that generate explosive sounds. The 2025 Explosives (Prohibition) Notification specifies that a total of 45 types of 'Pop-Pop' and 'Happy Boom' fireworks are permitted for ownership and importation by the Minister of Home Affairs. However, this permission remains subject to permits issued by the relevant district police chief and compliance with the prescribed specifications or conditions.

Mohd Khalid emphasized that police regulations are aimed at maintaining public order and preventing injuries, fires, and disturbances caused by the misuse of firecrackers. He explained that enforcement under the Explosives Act 1957 is intended to protect public safety. Additionally, he advised the public to light fireworks only in open areas and to adhere to safety rules to avoid disturbing others.
