Sandakan: The Sandakan District Disaster Management Committee (JPBD) has declared the end of the fire disaster in the district today. In a statement, Sandakan JPBD chairman Datuk Walter Kenson said the operation was concluded this evening.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Datuk Walter Kenson stated, "Based on reports and field information received from agencies under JPBD, it is hereby declared that the disaster situation is now over." The declaration marks the conclusion of recovery operations following the extensive fire that impacted the area.
On May 2, all eight temporary relief centres, which were set up to accommodate victims of the Kampung Bahagia fire, were fully closed. These centres had been a temporary refuge for those who lost their homes during the disaster.
The fire, which occurred on April 19, devastated about 1,000 houses in the floating village, leaving thousands of residents affected. The closure of the relief centres signifies a significant step towards normalcy for the displaced residents as efforts continue to restore the community.
