Kuala Lumpur:Findings from integrated operations targeting vagrancy and children in Kuala Lumpur will be presented to the Cabinet to develop more comprehensive solutions, as stated by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the KL Strike Force operation conducted early this morning aimed to identify current trends, focusing on hard-core cases of individuals repeatedly detected in previous operations. The operation's findings will be analyzed to determine the number of people detained multiple times.
Deputy Minister Datuk Lo Su Fui, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Fadlun Mak Ujud, and Federal Territories Department Director-General Datuk Muhammad Azmi Mohd Zain were present during the operation. The effort involved several agencies, including the Ministry of Health, National Registration Department, Immigration Department, Kuala Lumpur City Hall, Social Welfare Department, National Anti-Drug Agency, and National Security Council.
Hannah noted this was the third operation in Kuala Lumpur this year, with data to be compared against statistics from the past two years to devise a more effective action plan. The government plans further discussions with NGOs for additional insights.
The operation's screening process determines the handling of individuals: non-citizens or undocumented individuals are referred to the Immigration Department, mental health cases to the Ministry of Health, and drug-positive individuals to the National Anti-Drug Agency. Malaysians without a place to stay receive assistance from the Social Welfare Department and Kuala Lumpur City Hall.
Hannah acknowledged a lack of dedicated mental health facilities contributes to individuals returning to the streets after receiving treatment, perpetuating a cycle. She emphasized the operation's significance in preserving the country's image for Visit Malaysia 2026, particularly in tourist hotspots like Bukit Bintang.
Furthermore, her ministry supports the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development's efforts to introduce new legislation to enhance the Social Welfare Department's authority in managing diverse cases.
