Kuala Lumpur:Follow-up actions on audits conducted by the National Audit Department have led to revenue collection and repayments totaling RM920.91 million to the government as of September 28, according to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Azalina emphasized that this substantial amount demonstrates the effectiveness of audits when findings are followed by appropriate actions. She expressed these views while presenting a motion on the Auditor General's Report (LKAN) 2/2026 in the Dewan Rakyat.
Azalina urged all ministries, departments, and agencies to perceive audit findings not as an attack but as an opportunity to correct weaknesses, improve systems, and protect public funds. The LKAN 2/2026, tabled on October 5, includes two main volumes, covering the 2025 Federal Government Financial Statements and a performance audit of four ministry, department, and agency programs or activities.
The report contains 38 recommendations necessitating follow-up actions to address concerns about responsible parties, corrective measures, timelines for completion, and progress monitoring methods. Azalina stressed the importance of debating the LKAN in the Dewan Rakyat to ensure accountability beyond the tabling of audit reports.
She called on state legislative assemblies to allow for open examination and debate of the LKAN to ensure accountability at all government levels. Furthermore, she noted that amendments to the Audit Act 1957 in 2024 have strengthened the Auditor General's institution, enhancing the audit scope and powers.
Azalina also highlighted institutional reform initiatives, such as freedom of information and political financing reform, along with the establishment of the Malaysian Ombudsman, as complementary measures to the audit function, emphasizing prevention, transparency, and accountability.
