Federal Government to Announce Diesel Subsidy Improvements Soon

Kuala lumpur: The Federal government is anticipated to announce enhancements to the diesel subsidy mechanism within a month, as confirmed by Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali. He expressed optimism that the announcement could be made sooner than the previously estimated one to two-month timeframe.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has conducted engagement sessions with relevant parties, and all feedback has been submitted to the Ministry of Finance (MOF). The feedback and input from the Sabah and Sarawak state governments, along with KPDN, have been fully communicated to the MOF, the federal agency responsible for the matter. The improvements aim to safeguard the interests of the people.

On August 16, Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan mentioned that several improvements to the targeted diesel subsidy system were under review and would be announced within the next one to two months. These improvements include simplifying the application process, easing eligibility criteria for taking over hire-purchase vehicles, and allowing quota transfers to immediate family members.

Meanwhile, Armizan revealed that KPDN has initiated investigations under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act against two ferry operators that increased fares for trips between Kudat and Banggi Island. The ferry companies failed to respond to a notice requesting information, leading Armizan to direct the Malaysia Competition Commission (MyCC) to investigate potential price-fixing elements.

Armizan clarified that public passenger ferries are eligible for subsidised diesel through skid tanks, subject to application to the Malaysia Marine Department. However, neither of the ferry companies has submitted official applications despite being advised by authorities to do so.

In response to the situation, Armizan suggested that the Sabah government consider taking over the regulatory and licensing responsibilities for passenger ferries under the Sabah Ports and Harbour Department to foster market competition. This proposal will be presented to Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Ewon Benedick, who oversees the state's transportation and ports portfolios.
