Petaling Jaya:The government will allow legal proceedings to follow established protocols in response to a civil suit filed by the family of Yap Shing Xuen, a teenager who died after being stabbed by a fellow student at a secondary school in Bandar Utama last October.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) M. Kulasegaran stated he could not comment on the specifics of the suit due to incomplete information. He emphasized that government and police actions would adhere to standard procedures unless extraordinary circumstances arise.
Kulasegaran noted that the government is developing new legislation to incorporate mental health considerations, with discussions underway involving relevant agencies and NGOs. These efforts aim to ensure mental health issues, particularly those affecting youths, receive adequate attention.
The media previously reported that Yap's mother and elder sister filed a civil suit at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on October 1 against various parties. The suit, submitted through Messrs Surendra Ananth, names several government agencies, as well as the parents and the teenager responsible for Yap's death, as defendants. The family contends that the tragedy might have been prevented if appropriate measures addressing mental health among students had been implemented.
