Penang: Media professionals across the ASEAN region have been urged to strengthen cross-border collaboration to promote accurate reporting and combat the rise of misinformation. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil emphasized the importance of fostering closer partnerships, sharing knowledge, and exchanging best practices among the regional media community. He remarked that media serves as a lifeblood connecting people to current realities, acting as a bridge between policymakers, implementers, events, and public understanding. In an era where information flows rapidly and narratives vie for attention, journalism rooted in truth, integrity, and responsibility remains indispensable.
The event was attended by notable figures including Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, Penang State Secretary Datuk Seri Zulkifli Long, Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Abdul Halim Hamzah, and Communications Ministry deputy secretary-general (Strategic Communications and Creative Industries) Datuk Bahria Mohd Tamil. Fahmi further noted that the HAWANA 2026 celebration is designed not only to recognize the media's role as a strategic partner in national development but also to serve as a platform for reinforcing the commitment to continually uplift the journalism profession in an increasingly challenging era. He expressed appreciation to the Penang State Government for hosting the HAWANA 2026 celebration and organizing the event, acknowledging the state's high respect for the media fraternity's significant role and contribution to society and the nation.
