Fahmi Advocates for TikTok Revenue Opportunities for Malaysian Media

Kuala lumpur:<Text>

The Communications Ministry is prepared to hold discussions with TikTok to enable media organisations in Malaysia to generate revenue from livestream content broadcast on the platform. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said media organisations should be given the opportunity to earn returns from audiences viewing content through their official platforms.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fahmi mentioned that many media professionals have raised concerns about their inability to generate revenue from livestreams. He conveyed the message from Editors-in-Chief to TikTok Malaysia's Head of Public Policy, urging them to consider this matter. Media organisations feel there is a need to find revenue streams from livestream broadcasts and content they produce, which are deemed to be of high quality.

Fahmi, speaking at the closing ceremony of the Festival Belia @ National Youth Day 2026 celebration, stated that the issue was not limited to TikTok. Most social media platforms benefit from content produced by media organisations and official media accounts. However, Editors-in-Chief informed him that certain platforms, including TikTok, do not allow media organisations to monetise or receive returns from their published content.

He expressed his willingness to engage in discussions with TikTok to explore solutions that would benefit Malaysian media organisations. Fahmi emphasized that if livestreams conducted by media organisations attract significant viewership, there should be a mechanism in place for them to receive returns from platforms like TikTok.

Fahmi also highlighted the challenge faced by viewers who are unable to send virtual gifts or financial contributions due to the media brand's restrictions. He reiterated the ministry's commitment to working with social media platforms to ensure sustainable growth of the country's media ecosystem by exploring suitable monetisation models for local media organis ations.
