Kuala lumpur: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has suggested that the relevant parties conduct regular media briefings on efforts to resolve the land border issue between Sabah and North Kalimantan (Kaltara) to avoid misunderstandings. He emphasized the necessity of these briefings to ensure that accurate information is conveyed to the public, thus preventing confusion from unverified reports.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fahmi welcomed the statement by Ikatan Setiakawan Wartawan Malaysia-Indonesia (ISWAMI) and pointed out that the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) is the responsible entity. He noted that briefings have already been conducted with some media outlets but recommended that they be held more regularly to ensure the dissemination of accurate information. This initiative is particularly important given the involvement of the Department of Survey and Mapping Malaysia concerning the technical aspects of boundary demarcation and national border calculations.
Fahmi also acknowledged the concerns raised by the Indonesian Ambassador to Malaysia, Datuk Raden Mohammad Iman Hascarya Kusumo, regarding previous inaccuracies in reporting on the issue. He stressed the need for NRES to provide accurate information to Malaysian media to prevent potential misunderstandings among the public.
ISWAMI, in a recent appeal, urged media organisations in Malaysia and Indonesia to promote a harmonious narrative. The organization also proposed that both governments offer special briefings for media practitioners. ISWAMI Malaysia president Datuk Ahmad Zaini Kamaruzzaman and ISWAMI Indonesia president Asro Kamal Rokan emphasized that media reporting should prioritize official sources from both nations, advocating for a balanced, prudent approach and contextual reporting in all coverage.
