Expansion of Boat Licences to Benefit Malaysian Fishermen

Kuala Lumpur:The RM30 million allocation aimed at increasing the number of special boat licence holders from about 17,000 to 20,000 is expected to enhance access to various facilities and assistance for eligible fishermen, according to Department of Fisheries (DOF) director-general Datuk Adnan Hussain.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the initiative was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the tabling of Budget 2027. It aligns with the National Agrofood Policy 2.0, which seeks to develop a competitive, sustainable, and resilient fisheries sector in Malaysia.

Datuk Adnan Hussain emphasized that the expansion of the special boat licence scheme requires proper eligibility verification and licensing management processes. These processes must adhere to legal provisions, including the Fisheries Act 1985, to ensure sustainable fisheries activities and the well-being of fishing communities. Additionally, the RM178 million allocation for catch incentives and the Fishermen's Cost of Living Allowance, which offers up to RM300 monthly, aims to alleviate the living costs and support the livelihoods of eligible fishermen.

The diesel subsidy of RM1.65 per litre is also a significant measure to reduce fishing operating costs, particularly fuel expenses, thereby supporting ongoing fishing activities and the national fish supply. The DOF plans to continue enhancing targeted assistance delivery, aquaculture development, and sustainable fisheries resource management to boost the income of fishing communities.

Meanwhile, the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) highlighted the RM40 million allocation for aquaculture projects, which is anticipated to expand business opportunities for fishermen and increase local fish production capacity. LKIM chairman Muhammad Faiz Fadzil noted that the RM30 million allocation for special boat licences would help boost domestic fish supply while protecting the interests and welfare of fishermen in Zone A.

Abdul Hamid Bahari, chairman of the National Fishermen's Association (NEKMAT), expressed gratitude for the incentives and special allocations under Budget 2027. He acknowledged the MADANI Government's concern for fishermen and their contributions to national food security, noting that these measures not only ease living and operational costs but also motivate fishermen to ensure a secure fish supply for Malaysians.
