Ex-Kedah Keeper Azmi Proves His Mettle On The Green

Petaling jaya: Former Kedah goalkeeper Mohd Azmi Mahmud has proven he’s just as capable on the golf course, finishing runner-up in the second leg of the qualifying round to earn a spot in the World Corporate Golf Challenge (WCGC) Malaysia National Finals. During the match held at the Tropicana Golf and Country Club in Petaling Jaya recently, single-handicapper Mohd Azmi and his partner Azhar Husain were among the top five winners who qualified for the national finals.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, after retiring from football, Mohd Azmi took up golf as a part-time sport and soon became deeply involved in it. In a statement, he expressed satisfaction with qualifying for the national finals, acknowledging the competition’s challenging field filled with skilled players.

The tournament, following the successful opening leg last month, saw intense competition. The top five teams in the Two Ball Best Ball Stableford contest secured their spots in September’s national finals at Kota Permai Golf and Country Club. Single-handicapper Tay Cher Haw and his partner Liew Vin Sern of Seng Haw Timber Sdn Bhd emerged as the winners, achieving a combined Stableford score of 49 points.

Mohd Azmi and Azhar, representing MG Synergy, secured the second spot with 46 points, just three points behind the winners. The Widad Skycore (M) Sdn Bhd team of Isyraf Widad Muhammad Ikmal Opat and Mohd Adib Ibrahim finished third with a score of 45 points, surpassing Muhammad Feyyaz and Amirul Adli Senu from Feyyaz Sports Group on countback.

The final pair to advance to the national finals was Muhammad Firdaus Said and Mohd Azwan of Sinar Jernih Sdn Bhd, who also returned a score of 45 points. The winning team at the national finals will represent Malaysia at the WCGC World Final, scheduled to be played at the PGA Anying Golf Club in Shanghai from October 19-23.
