Emotional Preparedness Key For Pilgrims Facing Haj Challenges

Kuala lumpur: Emotional preparedness has been identified as a key factor in ensuring the smooth conduct of the haj, alongside the more commonly emphasised physical requirements. Tabung Haji (TH) counselling manager Azlina Abdul Hamid highlighted the challenges faced by pilgrims due to a sudden shift in their surroundings upon arrival in the Holy Land, including new weather conditions, routines, and unfamiliar settings. This can lead to feelings of anxiety, stress, and homesickness, particularly among first-time pilgrims traveling abroad.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Azlina mentioned that some pilgrims may appear cheerful and composed outwardly, but internally they might be grappling with emotional fatigue or a deep sense of homesickness. To address these issues, emotional support is provided through counselling sessions, room-to-room visits, and casual conversations aimed at detecting any changes in behavior. Azlina emphasized the importance of a proactive approach, noting that not all pilgrims seek help on their own.

She further explained that close coordination with the medical team and worship guides is in place to ensure every issue is addressed holistically. Azlina advised prospective pilgrims to start their mental preparation well in advance, fostering patience and an open mindset. She noted that when emotions are stable, pilgrims experience a calmer journey and are better able to engage with each stage of the pilgrimage in a meaningful way.

Haj operations for the 1447/2026 season officially commenced on April 18, with 31,600 Malaysian pilgrims traveling in stages to Madinah and Makkah. The transportation is facilitated by 100 special-charter flights operated by AMAL by Malaysia Airlines and Saudia Airlines.
