Elderly Woman Faces Court in RM170,000 Concealment Case

KUALA LUMPUR: An elderly housewife appeared in the Sessions Court to face allegations of concealing RM170,000, reportedly belonging to another woman.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Jariton Sa’adiah Buhari, 63, was charged with assisting in concealing or transferring the sum of RM170,000, owned by Chia Min Min, 48. The funds were allegedly moved into Buhari’s Maybank account at a local restaurant between February 14, 2024, and March 8, 2024.

The charges brought against Buhari fall under Section 424 of the Penal Code, which stipulates a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both, upon conviction.

During the proceedings, Deputy Public Prosecutor Atiqa Nazihah Azmi recommended a bail amount of RM20,000 with one surety. Additional conditions proposed included the requirement for the accused to report to the nearest police station monthly and to surrender her passport to the court for the duration of the case.

Buhari, who appeared in court without legal representation, requested a reduction in bail, citing her status as an unemployed single mother of four children. Judge Mohd Kafli Che Ali granted her release on bail, setting the amount at RM10,000 with one surety, and upheld the prosecution’s additional conditions. The court scheduled February 5 of the following year for the next case mention.
