Selangor: About 308,000 business entities across Selangor will be covered under the Economic Census 2026 (BE2026), the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said. In a statement on Sunday, DOSM reported that 74.1 percent of the total consists of micro entities, followed by small entities at 24.6 percent, large entities at 4.7 percent, and medium-sized entities at 1.5 percent.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, by sector, services accounted for the largest share at 83.8 percent, or 258,909 entities, followed by construction at 8.6 percent, or 26,512. Manufacturing was third at 6.6 percent, or 20,343, while agriculture made up 0.8 percent, or 2,454. Mining and quarrying accounted for 0.2 percent, or 643 entities, the statement said.
DOSM organized the BE2026 Implementation Programme for the Sabak Bernam district at Laman Rasa, officiated by its chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin. Speaking to reporters, Mohd Uzir stated that the business structure in Sabak Bernam was dominated by micro, small, and medium enterprises, particularly micro entities, with the highest concentration of activity in Sungai Besar and Sekinchan, which serve as local commercial hubs.
He mentioned that preliminary BE2026 records showed the district had 213 informal-sector entities, including hawkers, small grocery shops, and community-based businesses, as well as 90 homestay operators supporting the growth of local agrotourism. Key industries in Sabak Bernam include food processing, particularly the production of crisps and snack foods, which are concentrated around Sungai Besar, Parit Baru, and Sekinchan.
Mohd Uzir highlighted that the local business ecosystem is supported by a network of seven public markets housing 635 outlets, positioning the district as one of Selangor's active centers for agricultural produce, seafood, and agro-based products. He emphasized that the combination of formal and informal activities makes Sabak Bernam a significant area in BE2026, particularly from the perspective of rural development and the empowerment of the micro economy.
He further explained that BE2026 analysis would be compiled at a granular level, including data by district, sub-district, and type of economic activity. This approach enables deeper, more localized economic analysis, in line with the principle of 'no one and no place left behind' in socio-economic development. The participation of all entities, including those in urban and rural areas such as Sabak Bernam, is crucial to ensure the data produced are accurate, reliable, and truly reflect the diversity of the economy.
Carrying the theme 'Data, the Pulse of the People's Economy', BE2026 will be conducted nationwide from February to October 2026, covering all business entities and non-profit institutions in Malaysia across all economic sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, construction, mining and quarrying, and services.
